Every student is a warrior whose pen and paper are his sword and shield for his everyday arena called school, and every night he has to reload his weapons by an intense preparation called studying. But for every battle, there will always be the challenge and the rivals which he needs to overcome – the brain crushing subjects as his most horrible nightmares and most despicable monsters.
Not all students are interested with all their subjects. Even the smartest ones in class struggle with at least one subject. Everyone who enters school fears to encounter the subjects which they disgust the most or what they perceive at first to be their lifetime kraken. Passing a subject for each grading period is already an achievement and a temporary “comfort zone” for them but the following quarter will be hell-like again. But for some scholars who have to maintain a satisfactory grade requirement, they can be their muddy-rocky roads at day and bed of nails at night.
For most of the students, these mind blowing subjects can be classified according to the academic stress and anxiety they contribute before, during and after term exams.
First in line are the “silent killers”. These subjects seem basic and easy to cope with, and students sometimes tend to take them for granted during class discussions, not knowing that these subjects will unconsciously attack them to the point they least expect – during the exams. These subjects include Values Education, Philosophy, History and other related subjects.Usually, their types of tests do not only involve knowledge but also require analysis and critical thinking. Shallow understanding about the topic is a huge risk.
Second, the “hand-sassins”, which come from the combination of “hand” and “assassins”, usually go with the“mind squeezers”. From the concepts themselves, “hand-sassins” and “mind squeezers” are those subjects which literally exhaust students from copying their notes written at the board, giving them tons of loads to memorize and familiarize. A jam-packed white board crowds several pages of a notebook. These subjects are also termed as “The Feeling Major Group” or the “Major Major Group”. However, nowadays, technology brings students a more convenient method to obtain their notes. In just a click of a phone camera, these can be acquired without the hustles of taking down notes, and they can be easily disseminated all throughout the group, but the main issue is that their types of exams can be compared to a board exam as students always complain their broader coverage of the topics. These subjects encompass Music, Arts, Physical Education and Health (MAPEH), Contemporary Arts, and the like.
What follows is the “terminator”. It is a do-or-die herculean task, and may take months to years to accomplish, base on its type and duration of the conduct – The Research Subject/ Thesis– wherein every student starts with nothing, conceptualizes with anything, and constructs with something worth-conducting.Almost all students have to pass through this “mind blowing”, “pocket draining”, and “body exhausting” subject.Advantageous for those who have skills in construction of sentences, knowledgeable in organizing the structure of the study, and have keen eyes in correcting grammar and spelling errors, this “terminator” will always keep every student to be up all night just for the sake of passing this course-failing subject because, if unable to pass this, one will begin all over again and that will be very time consuming.
Climbing the ladder up, the “ITech-xecutioner” comes next for the Information Technology students, and other related course – the Computer Programming subject – and they all just like being sentenced to death as they take the course in college, and is really the survival of the fittest. Students in line with these courses must possess wide vocabulary to store for the terms and symbols, and definitely know how to create a program given a certain problem. Java programming, Pascal programming, C++, and even more difficult and complex programs serve as “daily meals” for these students, which they have to be familiar of the process.
Lastly, the crown and the throne go with every student’s “perennial rival” – Mathematics. No doubt because this number 1 brain crusher is the worst nightmare and the most “curse”subject for all students for the rest of their lives. As both letters and numerical coefficients converge in a mathematical equation, students think that those will be just like the end of their worlds. They imagine how their minds being twisted, crumpled, whipped, pulverized, electrocuted and tortured all throughout their student years because Mathematics has the extraordinary power to turn their marks into red, and that makes their life even more miserable. Its just like math causes them both cardiac arrest and brain hemorrhage. Some students tend to ask random questions of the significance of finding the “x” in Algebra like “Is Algebra really a need in performing basic household chores?”.
For the Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and any engineering students, they have to deal with Pre-calculus, Basic Calculus, Differential Calculus, Integral Calculus, Differential Equations and more higher mathematics subjects which will hone their problem solving skills as time passes by. Their scientific calculators are their best buddies. Other subjects which cover problem solving are Chemistry and Physics and these subjects are also their burdens.
Reasons why these subjects receive harsh curses from the students making them as remarkable brain crushers can be enumerated in words. First of all, a student may find hard for him to deal with the subject. It is because he has a weak foundation about the basics of the subject. Second, he may be incompatible with the course wherein his skills and mental capacity are not match with the subjects he will be taking in his course. Third, the educator seems a terror to the whole class. For every student who perceives his teacher to be an intimidation in his studies, it gives him more distraction in listening and understanding the lessons being discussed rather than absorbing the topic and focusing on it. Learning is a teacher-student process and factor in order for it to happen. These subjects will be less brain crushing if these two factors try their bes to cooperate with one another.
Every student is a warrior and in order for him to claim hismost desired and most awaited prize, he has to win his own battle within him because his real opponent is not his scariestmind blowing subject but himself.
